I have read Raphael Sabatini's work on the life of Cesare Borgia before, online and for free. The language is beautiful, courtly and elegant, and the author provides lots of backup evidence for his conclusions. I particularly like that his footnotes follow the paragraph in which they are contained, so the reader does not have to continually flip back and forth in the book to read the references. You know the old saying about not judging a book by its cover? Well, since I have already read this work, why did I buy this version of it for money? Did I judge this book by its cover? The Italian author words sounded like they were from the 13 century but he is an Italian born in 1875 and died in 1950. The cable series The Borgias from Showtime and now NetFlix prompted my interest to know more. The extremely long arguments with excessive long passages of untranslated Latin were boring. It would have been great to have had the publisher include a Geo-political map of Italy during that time.
Such a fascinating man of his time and such an interesting story! The fact he really existed, made such a historical decision within the life of the Catholic Church, plus the fact he was a celebrity of his time, even though he was an intelligent man, he was really discounted for being who he was, which was like many other men and their actions of the time, Cesare was just more brilliant than most men of the time. Sabatini writes Cesare's story in such detail and comprehensive manner but also in a well descriptive language that makes this book such an excellent read!
I love this book. I was happy to finally see an unbiased opinion about the Borgia family.
I enjoyed this book a lot, I love the fact that the author investigated more deep into Cesare's life. He was no more evil than the people he was surrounded by.
Historically interesting; however, the text is mixed with footnotes, making the reading quite complicated.
Sabatini's book is excellent, but this particular reprint of it by Wallachia Publishers is AWFUL and to be avoided at all costs. Not only does it not include any of Sabatini's footnotes, but also it is UNPAGINATED. No page numbers AT ALL, which means that it is of no scholarly value whatsoever. I am returning my copy to get my money back!!!
First heard of Rafael Sabatini in the amusing script of the Jason Robards' film A THOUSAND CLOWNS. Sabatini wrote historical fiction, in particular SCARAMOUCHE. His biography of Cesare Borgia is a fascinating antidote to the recycled propaganda spewed by the highly entertaining and well-acted (albeit historically inaccurate) Showtime series The Borgias.
